5 things I’ve learnt trying to find a rental property!

We have a house! If you follow me on Twitter or Instagram, you will know that I’d put in an application for a rental property in Melbourne. To be completely honest, I’m super surprised we got the first house we went for. I was expecting to search for awhile, maybe get rejected, etc, but nope. It’s a cute 3 bedroom place with a roomy backward. I’ve not yet seen it, but I’m super excited to. You’ve probably noticed that my posts have slowed down recently, between that and packing, I’ve honestly not been doing anything exciting or wearing more then leggings and singlets! Sorry! Anyway, I thought I’d share a few things I’ve learnt along my recent journey!

Use the phone, don’t email.
I have a bit of a phone phobia. I dislike talking on phones, and prefer to communicate other ways. Email, text, I’d even prefer to write a letter, but sadly I found that using the phone was the fastest solution. I’m pretty sure I made more phone calls in the last month then I did all of last year. While Domain has a nifty little form on the property page, which sends a quick little email to the Agent, it’s often a pre-filled copy & paste reply. I had to suck it up, and use the phone.

Secretary > Agent
Secretaries are amazing. Agents seem to not really care. Then again, I find that with Nurses and Doctors in hospitals too. Out of the many Agents I contacted, only a few seemed to be helpful. I’m not sure if that’s the nature of rental agents or what, but it was a bit frustrating. On the other hand, the secretaries were helpful and very charming. The lady who managed the house we got seems to be quite nice though.

Have all the documents you think you’ll need, and then some. Also, a scanner!
Thank heavens for the internet! These days, most of your information like bank statements and such can be found online and downloaded as a PDF. I’ve been lucky in the past and only had private rentals, so the amount of info I had to show kind of astounded me. I admit to being a bit naive going into it. Bank statement, Centerlink documents (if any), utility bills, your passport, your medicare card, your drivers licence. I had all the info needed though and was able to scan everything onto a computer to send off. Of course, me still being in Sydney meant I’ve had to do 95% of everything via email.

All states are different.
Most of the info I know about renting through a real estate, has come from my Brother and his more recent house hunts. To say that the property market in Sydney is different to the one in Melbourne, is an understatement. From pricing, to rent in advance times and also general leasing time lines, it’s all quite different! In NSW, you are only required to pay 2 weeks rent in advance, whilst we had to pay a Month.

Use a Pet Resume!
If you have a pet, that is! I remember Liz writing a post ages ago about doing up a Pet Resume for her cat. Whilst the post isn’t online any more, she was happy to send me a copy so I could have a look at it. I included a couple of pictures of Tonka, some information on him, as well as contact numbers for my current vet and a pet reference. While the Agent called me and asked me a few questions about him, I think the Pet Resume helped in learning a bit more about him.

The photos in this post is my current place, #thedarlingden. I’ll share some pictures of the new place once I’ve moved. I need to think of a new name!!

Have you rented? Any tips you can share with me?

The Darling Den – Bedroom Update

darlingden-001

It’s been over a year since I moved into The Darling Den, and I’ve had a few people ask for updates. My bedroom is as done as it will be for awhile, so I thought i’d show you around that. You may remember what this place looked like before I moved in, but if not, you can see it here. You can also view the mock up of how I wanted the room to end up looking here.

As you can see, I have a LOT of stuff, so storage was a must. I love the bookshelves I picked up, and I have hope to buy another one to replace the brown shelves I have holding some of my shoes on the other side of the room. My giant photo of Frodo & I takes pride of place over my bed, and while it was a little hard to look at after he passed away, now it’s kind of comforting.

I’m still on the lookout for the right lampshades for my lamps on my bedhead. I never realised how expensive lampshades can be! I don’t have my heavy doona on my bed, as it’s summer here, but I love this lime green coverlet I picked up on sale online at Urban Outfitters. My Doctor Who and Snape pillowcase are from ebay.

Shoes, shoes and more shoes. This is actually only around half of my shoe collection. The zig zag rug is another Urban Outfitters find.

One of Tonka’s favourite spots is on the window sill. Right outside is a wattle bush that often attracts rainbow laurikeets which he loves to make noises at. Ideally, I’d replace the two shelving units on each side of my dresser. The one on the left with the same white bookshelves, and the right with maybe a tallboy. I’d still love to have one of those fancy mirrored dressers, but I’m pretty happy with this hand me down from my parents. It will probably stay this way though, as most of the money I save these days goes to plane tickets (totally worth it!).

I love reading, and have a decent amount of books. I’ve been trying to cut down on un-needed possessions and cull some things lately, but I haven’t even gone near my books. I probably won’t read half of them again, but I just can’t seem to give them up. On my dresser next to my bed, I have my favourite picture of my Nan, you can kind of make it out, but it’s Nan sitting with her cat Sebastian on her lap, and Mr Frodo is squished between Nan and the couch.

Sooo, that’s my bedroom! If you’d like to know any specifics on any items in the room, feel free to ask!

It’s my life…

Sorry that i’ve been a bit absent lately. I’ve not been feeling 100% and have just felt a bit overwhelmed. Here is a few things that’s been happening as of late.

Melbourne! No, i’ve not been IN Melbourne. I’ve just been doing a LOT of research! I’m heading down for a week in November to attend The Blogcademy and I’ve been trying to figure out WHERE to stay. If you have any suggestions, or want to meet up for coffee, PLEASE, let me know!

Fat Bitch! Oh, I’m loving my Fat Bitch necklace I picked up from Black Heart Creatives. Oh, and the ‘beauty face’ setting on my phone gives me skin like Barbie.

Dating. Oh man, the whole dating thing is weird. It only really recently hit me that I’ve never really ‘dated‘ before. Thank heavens for the internet though. I’ve actually met a few of my bestest friends online, it really helps overcome shyness. Oh, and because of the whole ‘dating’ thing, it’s helped another one of my anxieties. Talking on the phone! I’ve been talking on the phone and the next thing I realise it’s 2 hours later!

Reading. I’ve been trying to catch up on reading blog posts. I follow way too many blogs, and often get behind reading them. So, if you’re a blogger, that’s why you’ll often find me commenting on old posts. I’ve also been reading a lot of books. I’m a sucker for paranormal romance novels and currently loving the Dragon Actually series by G.A. Aiken.

Also: Watching and WTFing over Hannibal. Snuggling my fur babies. Pinning. Dreaming of when The darling den will be finished, fingers crossed the kitchen renos start soon!
