5 DIY Jobs You Should Not Attempt Yourself

If you are handy with a screwdriver, it can be tempting to consider repairing and renovating everything in your home yourself. Not only can you save yourself a lot of money, but you will feel proud of yourself every time you look at your accomplishments. However, some tasks are a lot easier to do than others. Here are five DIY jobs you should not attempt yourself.

    Plumbing

Fixing a leaky tap might not be so bad, but undertaking more serious work can lead to problems. The escape of water in your home can be devastating and if you are not an expert, you can cause flooding in your home that will cost you thousands to repair. It is best to leave all but the simplest plumbing jobs to the professionals.

    Fixing Gas Appliances

Plumbers can fix gas appliances, but this is a specialist skill that they have to have extra training for and be certified to do. A gas leak can cause carbon monoxide poisoning, which, if left un-noticed, can kill you.  Gas is incredibly combustible and can cause huge explosions if you don’t handle it with expert care. If you don’t want to blow up half the street, it is far safer to leave the gas appliances alone.

    Electrical Work

Electricity is extremely dangerous to work with and you should leave any jobs that involve electrics to people who know what they are doing. Electricity could kill or severely injure you if you are not professionally trained. You could cause a fire in your home that could be catastrophic. It can be far cheaper and less dangerous to call a local electrician to carry out the work. They are easy enough to find if you look in the right places. However, if you need to find an electrician in Somerset, for example, make sure to search for a Somerset electrician with plenty of positive reviews.

    Removing Walls

This is a complex procedure and attacking a wall with an axe is never a clever idea. You need expert advice on whether the wall is safe to remove, whether you will need to use an alternative support structure, or if it is a load-bearing. Knocking a wall down without expert help could compromise the structure and stability of your home. If you don’t want your whole house to disappear into a pile of rubble, put the axe down and speak to the experts.

    Roof Work

Roof work is dangerous because you will need to do it from a great height and there are many things that can go wrong. For example, you could slip or fall off, and if the roof is very damaged or rotten, it might not take your weight which could lead to a nasty accident. The other difficulty with roof work is that problems can be difficult to spot for the untrained eye. You may be able to fix a couple of tiles to repair a leak, but this won’t work if the leak is coming from elsewhere and running along the roof. You could be fixing the wrong part. Alternatively, the problem could be with the felt underneath rather than the tiles. It is best to contact a professional who is trained to diagnose the issue.

Enjoy your simple DIY jobs but please leave these ones to the experts.
