A petrol pump is a component of a refuelling system that transfers fuel from one place, usually a storage tank, to a vehicle’s fuel tank with the aid of a dispensing nozzle. However, before deciding whether to go for a petrol hand pump or an electric petrol pump, it’s essential to understand first what you’re looking for and what options are available. This article will provide you with adequate information to help you make the right decision when it comes to petrol pumps.

What Does a Petrol Pump Do?

Petrol pumps typically transfer petrol from one tank or container to a nozzle so that it can be transferred into a vehicle. A pump can also be used to transfer petrol from one vehicle to another or to extract petrol from a car back to a storage container. Smaller petrol hand pumps are ideal for this activity.

What is the Difference Between Hand & Electric Petrol Pumps?

    Petrol Hand Pump

For some people, the cost and convenience of a petrol hand pump is better than using an electric petrol pump. These pumps tend to be quiet and take less effort to install, plus you don’t have to worry about any wiring. This type of fuel pump is suitable for daily and weekend drivers and will work just fine for anyone requiring something that’s reliable, fast and simple to install.

    Electric Petrol Pump

Electric petrol pumps come in handy when higher petrol pressures are needed. There are also some instances where a hand pump cannot be used. Electric fuel pumps tend to provide a greater variety of pressure outputs and flow rates compared to hand pumps.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Petrol Pump

Picking the right petrol pumps for you will vary depending on several factors, including the cars you need to fuel, your refuelling setup and the type of refuelling required. Here are some of the factors you should consider when choosing petrol pumps:

    • Flow rate – This is how fast fuel can be dispensed, and it is often measured in litres per minute (LPM). You will have to choose a petrol pump with the right flow rate depending on the size of your vehicle and its tank capacity. An extremely low flow rate will take more time to fill, while an extremely high flow rate could result in spilling.
    • Fuelling and setup mechanism –You have to consider where you will be refuelling and how the setup will be. If your refuelling station has a static petrol tank, then you should consider a permanent petrol pump.
    • Battery, mains or manual – At a refuelling station that has a static petrol tank, it makes sense to have an electric petrol pump. However, it is logical and cost-effective to use a hand pump for smaller vehicles or when refuelling smaller fuel quantities.

Approved measures and weights – The petrol pump to be used should be able to measure the provided amount to a high accuracy level and make sure that clients pay for what they receive. According to the established regulations, any pump that is used to resell fuel should be weights and measures approved.
