Six Signs It is Time to Consider Mental Health Counseling

Conflict, stress, and sadness can be part of life, and if you are feeling off you may find it difficult to know if you have to seek professional help. And those who have mental health issues don’t seek therapeutic intervention enough.  However, the earlier you get help, the easier it is to get through the issue. To help you evaluate whether you or a loved one can benefit from talking to a mental health professional, below are some signs to look for:

    Feeling Not Yourself

If you are experiencing anger, hopelessness, or sadness you cannot control, this can indicate a mental health problem that can be improved with treatment. If you are withdrawing from family and friends, eating and sleep more than usual, or feeling off, seek professional help before serious issues develop that can affect your quality of life.

    Uncontrollable Behavior

If you turn to a substance or behavior to help you feel better, you may need to get your coping skills fine-tuned. If you cannot control such behaviors or stop despite negative consequences in your life, you may be dealing with compulsive or addictive behavior that requires professional treatment including counseling.

A substance could even be food. Any changes in appetite can be another indicator that all is not well. Over-eating and not wanting to eat could mean that you are dealing with stress or struggling with the desire to care for yourself.

    Irrational Fear

Anxiety or irrational fear is a common sign of a lot of disorders including PTSD, social anxiety disorder, OCD, and generalized anxiety disorder. This condition can be paralyzing and dealing with it constantly can wreak havoc with your health over time. Plus, it interferes with sleep and other aspects of functioning. BetterHelp has a team of mental health experts who can help you improve your condition. They offer counseling to help you work through your issues over time.

    Constant Recall of Traumatic Events

Trauma turns your life upside down and seriously impact your psyche. Unwanted memories and images are usually branded into your brain, making you feel stuck. These memories can be triggered by even little, unrelated things, making you desperate to get rid of them.

Trauma can come back to haunt you in many ways. Flashbacks, nightmares, disturbing images, and severe anxiety are some ways it can make your life quite difficult. You can have trauma after being in combat, almost dying in an accident, being a victim of a crime, or witnessing a tragic accident. Seek professional help early will help learn healthy ways to cope.

    Suicidal Thoughts

If you frequently or seriously think about ending your life, you must seek help as soon as possible. Suicidal thoughts can quickly result in dangerous suicidal behavior. While suicidal thoughts and actions are mainly associated with depression and other mood disorders, most mental illnesses increase the risk of them occurring.

    Disconnection

If you no longer find joy in meeting with friends or joining family gatherings like you used to, this could indicate that something is amiss. Also, if you feel like there is not enough purpose or a feeling of a general sense of sadness, seeing a professional therapist could help you regain some clarity and begin in a new direction.
